The project started from a sketch that Mr. Joerg Desler, President of STULZ USA, provided to the Engineering team, which they turned into a detailed design. Our manufacturing team turned that design into reality with a small crew of skilled craftsmen, who shaped the pieces of aluminum, structural steel, and copper into a beautiful replica of a 19th-century sailing ship, the "Rickmer Rickmers". The Rickmer Rickmers is a famous tourist attraction and art museum, moored in the harbor near our company's headquarters in Hamburg, Germany. The STULZ USA team name our boat the "Rickmer Rickmers Too".

The Rickmer Rickmers Too is one of ten boats that were launched on Carroll Creek for the "Sailing Through the Winter Solstice" charity event in downtown Frederick, Maryland. All the boats will sail through the winter solstice into early February 2019. Each participating company has chosen a local charity to sponsor and will be raising money for the selected charity throughout the winter.

The new stand-alone product includes cooling, UPS, power distribution, security and monitoring tools

Calgary, AB. June 14, 2017 –CoolIT Systems (CoolIT), in partnership with STULZ, today announced a liquid cooled micro data center for High Performance Computing (HPC) applications. The unified solution, named STULZ Micro DC, combines CoolIT’s industry-leading efficient Direct Contact Liquid Cooling technology (Rack DCLC™) with STULZ’ world-renowned mission critical air cooling products to create a single enclosed solution for managing high-density compute requirements.

The liquid cooled STULZ Micro DC manages 100% of the IT load into liquid and is room neutral. With the Micro DC, users can scale from traditional IT workloads to more than 80kW of IT into each system (depending on configuration). The stand-alone solution incorporates all the key components in a specified enclosure, including the rack, liquid cooling, cable management, UPS, power monitoring, and fire protection systems.  CoolIT Systems Rack DCLC™ technology captures 60-80% of the entire server heat load, while the remaining 20%- 40% is air cooled by an integral STULZ precision cooling unit contained inside the Micro DC. Configurations can also be purpose-built to include various options for heat rejection and reuse.

“The Micro DC is a compact data center that can be easily deployed in any environment while managing an incredible amount of power and performance,” said Joerg Desler, President of STULZ USA. “It’s modular system is configured to use various combinations of liquid and air cooling allowing the system to grow with the customer’s needs. Integrating STULZ technology with CoolIT Systems Rack DCLC™ has resulted in ultra-efficient total thermal solutions that can support any OEM server at even the highest density configurations.”

“The liquid cooled STULZ Micro DC is a self-contained, cost-efficient, high-density solution which impressively manages 100% of the IT heat,” said Geoff Lyon, CEO & CTO at CoolIT Systems. “The result is an incredibly easy system for customers to deploy and a great example of what can be achieved with the combined expertise of CoolIT Systems and STULZ.”

This is the first integrated product offering under CoolIT and STULZ’ Chip-to-Atmosphere™ partnership.  The STULZ Micro DC is available in three self-enclosed cabinet designs, each with 48U of standard rack space. Air and liquid cooling modules can be configured depending on the IT load and need for redundant operation.  Usable rack space will be dependent on the options selected. Additionally, businesses big or small can scale data center capacity up or down to meet fluctuating demands.

CoolIT’s DCLC™ technology uses the exceptional thermal conductivity of liquid to provide concentrated cooling to the hottest components inside a server, enabling very high density configurations even with today’s top performing processors. CoolIT’s liquid cooling solutions can be tailored to any server layout and have already been adopted by many server manufacturers as a reliable technology and is covered under standard warranties.

A demo of the liquid cooled Micro DC will be showcased by CoolIT Systems (booth C-1210) at the ISC High Performance 2017 event in Frankfurt from June 19 – 21.

Those interested in incorporating CoolIT Systems and STULZ solutions in their projects should start by contacting their local STULZ or CoolIT Systems sales representative.

news-1530 Wed, 12 Apr 2017 16:11:00 +0200 New Product for Small IT Spaces, Telecommunications, Medical, and Modular Data Centers http://www.stulz-usa.com/en/news-and-events/news/new-product-for-small-it-spaces-telecommunications-medical-and-modular-data-centers-1530/ STULZ USA Launches the STULZ Mini-Space EC Precision Cooling Solution Frederick, MD (April 12, 2017) Leading mission critical cooling manufacturer STULZ Air Technology Systems, Inc. (STULZ USA) today announced the launch of its next generation Mini-Space EC precision cooling system for small IT spaces. The Mini-Space EC provides up to 12 kW (41 MBH) of cooling while only occupying a 2 ft. x 2 ft. (0.6 m x 0.6 m) footprint making it ideal for small IT and telco closets, high-rise buildings, laboratories, and other constrained spaces.

“STULZ is proud to have the broadest offering of chilled water (CW) and direct expansion (DX) precision cooling capacities in the industry,” said Aaron Sabino, Product/Marketing Manager for STULZ USA. “The Mini-Space EC is the smallest floor mounted computer room air conditioner (CRAC) in our product line. Our standard catalog floor mounted solutions go up to 750 kW (2,600 MBH) and beyond for custom indoor air handlers and other user driven designs.”

The new Mini-Space EC is available with CW or DX cooling in both up-flow (top discharge) and down-flow (top return) configurations with options for bottom discharge (under floor), front discharge (direct room supply), and ducted rear return (with external filter box).

“The Electronically Commutated (EC) backward curved plenum fan is the key to this product’s efficiency,” continued Mr. Sabino. “Because it shares many of the same design aspects of the other STULZ floor standing products, we are able to provide a fully scalable air volume with EC fans that are designed to operate at reduced speed. The result is significant energy savings and lower maintenance costs compared to belt driven forward curved fans. The small footprint and reliability make this product an ideal solution for IT users, engineers and contractors looking to provide a space friendly and dependable cooling solution that eliminates hot spots.”

The STULZ Mini-Space EC joins the STULZ CeilAiR® overhead units, STULZ CyberRow rack cooling units, CyberPack packaged rooftop units, and the STULZ Micro Data Center as a solution for small data center applications. The Mini-Space EC is fully compliant with DOE regulations and meets the requirements of ASHRAE 90.1-2013 for data center cooling units.

“It’s an unfortunate reality that even in 2017, residential (comfort) cooling equipment is too often misapplied in small IT spaces,” said Mr. Sabino “This is bad for both the equipment owners and the environment. Comfort cooling equipment is not designed to run 24/7 or to maintain the tight tolerances required for IT cooling, which results in unscheduled down time and unplanned maintenance costs. In contrast, STULZ’ mission critical equipment is designed to accept the high sensible heat loads produced by IT equipment, and is more efficient with higher return temperatures. When you consider the total cost of ownership, the STULZ Mini-Space EC is the best solution for providing mission critical cooling in applications where minimal floor space is available.”

The STULZ Mini-Space EC is available for order in North America from STULZ USA and its sales partners.

news-1525 Thu, 30 Mar 2017 16:52:54 +0200 STULZ Publishes White Paper for Engineers Designing Cannabis Grow Rooms http://www.stulz-usa.com/en/news-and-events/news/stulz-publishes-white-paper-for-engineers-designing-cannabis-grow-rooms-1525/ Frederick, MD (March 09, 2016) Leading mission critical cooling manufacturer STULZ Air Technology... As of today, 29 states and the District of Columbia have some form of legal cannabis. That change has driven a large interest in the cannabis industry and the rapid expansion of grow facilities. As new laws have passed within a territory, local engineers, architects, and construction professionals have been faced with the challenge of rapidly understanding and providing solutions for a facility that they may have never encountered before.

The new white paper was authored by Dave Meadows who is the Director of Industry, Standards, and Technology at STULZ. “With many engineering firms being asked to design a grow facility for the first time, my hope is that this white paper will become a valuable resource for engineering firms who need to get up to speed quickly with selecting the right HVAC equipment,” said Mr. Meadows. “STULZ has been working directly with customers in this industry to deliver the right equipment and features to make them more successful. By sharing what we’ve learned, I believe the entire industry will benefit.”

STULZ USA has provided environmental control equipment to some of the premier grow facilities in the United States. By working closely with growers, STULZ has developed their CyberOne system to address some of the most important issues facing the cannabis industry including the prevention of mold and mildew, pest control, CO2 augmentation, and prevention of pollen contamination.

According to the white paper, there are several similarities between a data center and the modern cannabis grow room. The most noticeable similarity is the energy intensive nature of both industries and the subsequent desire to reduce operational costs through energy efficiency. Computer room air conditioners (CRACs) are well suited in almost all respects for grow room applications with controls and software designed for maintaining tight tolerances of temperature and humidity while using as little energy as possible. However, unlike a data center the grow room has a large latent load which comes from the large amounts of water that are fed to the plants on a daily basis. This water, which is removed primarily by the HVAC system, is produced through a biological mechanism known as “transpiration.” Typical computer room air conditioners are designed to remove as little moisture from a data center as possible to prevent the need for re-humidifying the space, providing a challenge for any engineer designing for grow room conditions.

To address this issue, STULZ USA medical CyberOne cannabis units have an enhanced dehumidification feature that rapidly reduces moisture content in the grow space while making fewer air changes.  “We have designed our cannabis systems so that the STULZ  E2 controller monitors relative humidity in the grow space and when it identifies a moisture spike due to transpiration it slows the fans rotational speed to reduce the CFM, dropping the average coil temperature to the low temperature set point,” confirmed Mr. Meadows. “The colder coil rapidly cools air below its dew point and strips unwanted moisture.  Hot gas, electric, steam, or hot water reheat precisely adjusted by the controller maintains the leaving air temperatures during dehumidification to stabilize the grow room and limit stress on the plants.”

Leading mission critical cooling manufacturer STULZ Air Technology Systems, Inc. (STULZ USA) today announced the launch of new indirect evaporative cooling equipment (IeCE) that uses the latest technology to provide high efficiency environmental control solutions for data centers. Coinciding with this announcement, the company also officially opened the STULZ IeCE Technical Evaluation Center in Frederick, MD.

“STULZ IeCE is designed to minimize costly mechanical cooling by optimizing the use of outside air, and the evaporation of water wherever possible,” said Global Outdoor Products Manager, Ken Wheeler. “Interest in this type of IDEC (Indirect Evaporative Cooling) solution continues to increase throughout the industry and it is easy to see why. Considering our system, it is possible to achieve a pPUE of 1.03 under ideal environmental conditions. That is a significant efficiency advantage over traditional mechanical cooling.”

STULZ IeCE systems are intended as centralized cooling solutions that are located outside the conditioned space, freeing up valuable square footage within the data center. They are designed to provide efficient and continuous temperature control 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Indirect evaporative cooling takes advantage of the cooling potential from outside air without introducing contaminants or humidity into the data center. A plate heat exchanger isolates the supply air from the outside air and the evaporation of water is used for cooling.

“Our system uses an aluminum plate heat exchanger,” continued Wheeler. “The material provides a significant heat transfer advantage over plastics, and when used with moderate return temperatures and containment solutions, it allows us to take advantage of cooler outside air extremely efficiently.”

The STULZ IeCE Technical Evaluation Center is an interactive testing facility located at the STULZ manufacturing and design campus in Frederick, MD.  This test facility allows customers to see STULZ IeCE unit and participate in witness testing.

“We are excited to offer our customers the opportunity to see a complete system in operation,” said Joerg Desler, President of STULZ Air Technology Systems, Inc. “With this test facility, we will be able to simulate performance with test conditions provided by the engineers and designers we are working with.”

“Our campus in Frederick, MD consists of over 218,000 sq. ft. of design and manufacturing space,” continued Mr. Wheeler, “We already work very closely with customers to design and customize all types of traditional and outdoor mission critical cooling solutions, and this new test facility extends our capabilities to a whole new level. We are extremely proud of it.”
